[STATEMENT] The Ongoing Cheap Labor and Modern-day Slavery through Labor Export/Import Program

In August 2024, 100 women from the Philippines arrived in South Korea. They participated in a caregiver program held for the first time by the South Korean and Philippine governments, aimed at providing "assistance" to mothers or expectant mothers. The Korean government believes that this program will be able to address the problem of the sharply declining birth rate in their country. With a promised salary of up to USD 1,750 per month and a working time of 30 hours a week, these young women left their families in the Philippines.

[STATEMENT] Stop Modern Day Slavery of Migrant Domestic Workers and End Impunity of Diplomats

The International Migrants Alliance (IMA) Asia Pacific is extremely shocked by a news reported by www.abc.net.au¹ on labour exploitation amounting to modern day slavery of Ms. Priyanka Danaratna, a Sri Lankan domestic worker by her employer, former Sri Lankan Deputy High Commissioner to Australia, Ms. Himalee Arunatilaka. Ms. Arunatilaka has been ordered by Federal Court in Canberra to pay Ms. Danaratna’s unpaid wages amounting to AU$374,000, plus another AU$169,000 in interest.

[ARTICLE] IMA Global Online Orientation

IMA Global successfully held an online orientation on December 15, 2024. The event, which was attended by around 40 participants from Asia, the USA, Canada, and Latin America, lasted for 1.5 hours and was facilitated by 2 IMA Executive Committee (EC) members: Manuel Hidalgo (MIREDES International) and Joanna Concepcion (Migrante International).
