There are 1.6 million seafarers on the seas around the world. Seafarers have always been exploited as disposable labor, in the second most dangerous industry in the world. They keep the movement of goods flowing across oceans, separated from their families and homelands. They face threats to their lives and livelihood from recruitment, training, manning, “flags of convenience” and neoliberal efforts to automate, contractualize, and de-regulate their work.

This online forum will present the current issues and challenges faced by seafarers and fishers, bring global solidarity to their grassroots-led campaigns, and strengthen IMA’s network of support for seafarers and fishers at ports around the world. We invite everyone to attend this important forum to learn and show solidarity for one of the most essential but exploited occupations in the world.
