Memorandum for Migrants and Refugees’ Actions on International Migrants Day 2023
Migrants, Refugees Demand: Life Dignity, Rights
Memorandum for migrants and refugees’ actions on International Migrants Day 2023
When: 18 December 2023
December 18 is International Migrants’ Day.
Every year, we commemorate this important day by conducting various activities that celebrate the grassroots migrants’ victories, highlight the many issues we and our families confront, and push forward our campaigns and demands.
This year, 2023, we see a general erosion of rights of migrants, refugees and our families. Labor rights exploitation and political repression grip migrant workers in the neck, whether they are domestic or care workers, working in farms or factories, land or sea based. The bleak living and working situation of migrant workers is yet seen as a better solution to millions of people who are forced to leave their countries due to impoverishment, mass unemployment and landlessness exacerbated by neoliberal impositions. The ongoing US-backed Israeli Zionist genocide of the Palestinian people presents the complete disregard by imperialism for human life and the right of Palestinian people to return, own and run their own country. In the United States, we celebrate the victory of the No to APEC Coalition, to which IMA USA is a member of, in disrupting the APEC Leaders’ Meeting in San Francisco, USA last November.
For this year’s International Migrants’ Day (#IMD2023), let us further heighten our call to uphold and protect the lives, rights and dignity of migrants, refugees and our families against neoliberal exploitation and war.
We encourage every and all member organisations of the International Migrants Alliance to conduct activities to commemorate #IMD2023 highlighting your respective campaigns and demands while expressing solidarity with migrants and refugees across the globe.
The IMA Executive Committee will release a statement for #IMD2023 on December 15.
What You Can Do:
1. Plan an activity on or before #IMD2023. December 18 is a Monday.
2. Inform the IMA Global Secretariat of your plans, which can then be included and promoted in the IMA action poster to be released prior December 18. It is okay if you do not wish your activity to be included in the poster for security concerns.
3. Take pictures or video-record your activity and share them with the IMA Global Secretariat either through email or social media. The IMA Global Secretariat will collate all documentation and release a video album of all our IMA activities for #IMD2023.
