A world without imperialism is possible.

This is the statement of the International Migrants Alliance as we join the movements of workers and peoples around the world in commemorating International Labour Day this 2016.

Everywhere, imperialism causes suffering to workers and peoples. Through the years, it has imposed the neoliberal policies of liberalisation, deregulation and privatisation that have spelled doom on many economies, devastating our agriculture and industry, and causing long-stricken poverty and social unrest. IMA Statement for May 1, 2015

 

On with the struggle, on with victory for migrants and the people.

The International Migrants Alliance congratulates on this International Labor Day all workers and their many friends, supporters and advocates for building and winning a strong international campaign for fellow migrant worker, Mary Jane Veloso. Truly, the campaign for Mary Jane is a strong expression of international solidarity.

Mary Jane was a victim of human and drug trafficking. After languishing in jail for five long years waiting for her execution by firing squad, she had no one else to turn to. But Migrante International, a global alliance of Filipino migrant organizations and member of the IMA, took her case and, together with the Association of Indonesian Migrant Workers (ATKI-HK), Indonesian Migrant Workers Union (IMWU-HK) as well as migrant-serving institutions and Indonesia-based people’s organizations, took the lead in the campaign to save her life. Migrant and Local Workers: Unite and Collectively Fight for Rights, Lives and Dignity

Migrant workers all over the world will go out today to join their local brothers and sisters in celebrating the 2013 International Labor Day.

A momentous day to be celebrated by remembering the many victories of many years of united and collective struggle from the working class – livable wages, eight working hours, better working conditions, fair and just contracts, rights and welfare benefits. It is worthy to include in these victories those that have been won by migrant workers themselves – passage of international conventions and national laws aiming to protect the rights of migrants, increase in wages of a few sections of the migrant sector, recognition of domestic work as work, among many others.

Yet, such a momentous day deserves to be celebrated with renewed fervor and renewal of commitment from the International Migrants’ Alliance (IMA) as many of these rights and victories are being eroded. Continue reading
