[STATEMENT] IMA Statement on International Earth Day
This April 22, 2024, we commemorate International Mother Earth Day, in the midst of "a perfect storm of climate crises, armed conflicts, economic and nature crises that are exacerbating inequality and pushing more people into poverty," according to the World Bank. "For people in developing countries, climate change means skyrocketing food prices, toxic air and polluted water. It leaves countries just one natural disaster away from poverty, forcing parents to pull their children out of school and entire communities to migrate."
[STATEMENT] Protect Bangladeshi migrant workers in Malaysia! Address labor trafficking and root causes of forced labor migration!
News reports have exposed that hundreds of thousands of Bangladeshi migrant workers have been duped into paying large amounts of money to syndicated recruitment agencies in their home country only to arrive in Malaysia without a job. Many have said to be languishing for months or years in cramped accommodations, lacking or having no access to food, support or sometimes even a toilet.
[STATEMENT] Crackdowns on Undocumented Migrants in South Korea
Recently, the South Korean government announced a crackdown on undocumented migrants for a period of 77 days, starting from April 15 to June 30, 2024. This crackdown campaign comes after the failure of previous crackdowns when numerous assaults, injuries and even deaths occurred. Despite the government’s stated goal of reducing the number of undocumented migrants, the number of undocumented migrants has increased from 410,965 in January 2023 to 423,085 in January 2024. This indicates that arrest and deportation policies are ineffective as they do not address the causes of migrants becoming undocumented.

On Wednesday, December 27, more than 100 students from various universities stormed a shelter which housed 137 Rohingya refugees including women and children, forced the refugees into trucks, took them to the office of Ministry of Law and Human Rights in Aceh, and demanded for the latter’s immediate deportation.
